Leh Itinerary for 5 Days: A Balanced First Trip to Ladakh

  • Tripsdoc

A realistic 5-day Leh itinerary for first-time visitors: rest on arrival, sightseeing in Leh, Indus valley monasteries and an overnight at Pangong Lake, with an alternative Nubra version.

Five days is the shortest trip that does Ladakh justice. It gives you time to rest after flying in, explore Leh and its monasteries, and take one major excursion to a high-altitude lake. This Leh itinerary for 5 days is designed for first-time visitors flying into Leh and puts acclimatisation first.

The 5-day plan at a glance

DayPlanOvernight
1Arrive in Leh, complete restLeh
2Gentle Leh sightseeingLeh
3Indus valley monasteries and SangamLeh
4Leh → Chang La → Pangong LakePangong
5Pangong sunrise → Leh → depart (or extra night)–

Most return flights leave Leh in the morning, so if you plan to fly out on day 5, consider adding a sixth night in Leh after Pangong.

Day 1: Arrive and rest

Morning flights land in Leh early. Head to your hotel and rest for the whole day. This is the most important day of the trip.

  • Drink plenty of water and eat light meals.
  • No alcohol, smoking or strenuous activity.
  • If you feel fine in the evening, a short, flat walk is enough.

Read our Leh altitude sickness and acclimatisation guide before you travel.

Day 2: Leh town at a gentle pace

If you slept reasonably and your headache (if any) has eased, today is for easy exploring. Take breaks, sit in cafés and avoid long staircases. The aim is to enjoy Leh while your body keeps adjusting.

  • Morning: walk through the old town and Main Bazaar.
  • Afternoon: visit Leh Palace, using the upper entrance if you want to avoid steep paths.
  • Evening: drive up to Shanti Stupa for sunset.

Our Leh sightseeing guide covers each place in more detail.

Day 3: Monasteries and the Srinagar highway

By day 3 most travellers feel more settled, but keep the pace steady and come back to Leh for an afternoon rest if you need it. Choose one of two half-day routes, or combine them if you feel well:

Option A: south-east of Leh

  • Shey Palace
  • Thiksey Monastery
  • Hemis Monastery (a little further)

Option B: west of Leh

  • Hall of Fame museum
  • Gurudwara Pathar Sahib
  • Magnetic Hill
  • Indus–Zanskar Sangam

Arrange your permit for Pangong today if it is not already done. See our Leh permit guide.

Day 4: Leh to Pangong Lake

Leave Leh after breakfast for Pangong via Karu and Chang La. Stop at Tangtse for lunch and reach the lake by mid-afternoon. On the way out of Leh you pass Shey and Thiksey again, then turn off the Manali highway at Karu and climb through Sakti village towards the pass. After Chang La, the long descent to Durbuk and Tangtse follows a valley of streams and marshland where you may spot marmots on sunny slopes.

  • Keep your stop at Chang La short.
  • Rest when you arrive at the lake; avoid long walks on the first evening.
  • Watch the colours change in late afternoon and dress warmly for the evening.

Read the Pangong Lake travel guide for stays and photography tips.

Day 5: Pangong sunrise and return

Get up early for sunrise, have breakfast and drive back to Leh. If your flight is the next morning, enjoy a relaxed evening in Leh. Use the afternoon for anything you missed earlier – a last walk in the old town, shopping for pashmina or dried apricots in Main Bazaar, or simply resting before the journey home. Pack the night before if your flight leaves early.

Alternative: 5 days with Nubra instead of Pangong

DayPlan
1Arrive and rest in Leh
2Leh sightseeing
3Monasteries
4Leh → Khardung La → Hunder
5Diskit Monastery → Leh

Nubra is lower than Pangong, so this version may suit travellers who are more sensitive to altitude. See the Nubra Valley guide.

A third option: 5 days without a night away

If anyone in your group is cautious about sleeping at high altitude, you can base yourself in Leh for all five nights and make day trips instead:

  • Days 1–2: rest and gentle sightseeing in Leh.
  • Day 3: monasteries south-east of Leh – Shey, Thiksey, Hemis.
  • Day 4: the Srinagar highway – Hall of Fame, Magnetic Hill, the Sangam, with an optional visit to Alchi or Likir.
  • Day 5: a morning drive up to Khardung La and back (only if everyone feels well), or a relaxed day in Leh before departure.

You miss the lakes and dunes, but you still see much of what makes Ladakh special, at a gentler altitude.

Pangong or Nubra for a 5-day trip?

Both are excellent, and the right choice depends on your priorities and how your group handles altitude. Nubra involves crossing Khardung La but sleeping lower than Leh, with dunes, camels and a large monastery to explore. Pangong involves crossing Chang La and sleeping well above Leh, with the reward of the lake at sunset and sunrise.

  • Choose Pangong if the lake is your main reason for visiting Ladakh.
  • Choose Nubra if you want sand dunes, camels and a lower overnight altitude.

Where to stay on a 5-day trip

NightsWhereWhat to look for
1–3LehA quiet area such as Changspa or near Fort Road; heating and hot water; a garden or terrace for rest days
4Pangong (or Hunder)Attached bathroom, extra blankets, a location close to the shore
5 (optional)LehClose to the airport road if you have an early flight

Many travellers keep their Leh room for the whole trip and leave larger bags there while they go to the lake for one night.

If someone feels unwell

On a short trip there is a temptation to push on. Resist it. If anyone in your group has a worsening headache, vomiting or breathlessness at rest, postpone the Pangong night and stay in Leh, where medical help is available. A five-day trip can easily become a Leh-based trip with day excursions – and it is better to see less than to become seriously ill. Our altitude guide lists the warning signs.

What to book in advance

  • Flights: book early for peak months and keep some flexibility.
  • Pangong stay: limited in peak season.
  • Vehicle for day 4: taxi or rental arranged before you arrive, or on day 2 or 3.
  • Permits: arranged before you head to Pangong.

Tips for a 5-day trip

  • Book flights with some flexibility in case of weather delays.
  • Carry layers – Leh can be warm, Pangong cold.
  • Keep cash for monasteries and small shops.
  • Do not add extra destinations at the cost of rest.

For tips on keeping costs down, see our Ladakh budget trip guide.

Packing for five days

Even on a short trip you need clothes for two very different climates: mild days in Leh and freezing nights at the lake. Bring thermals, a fleece, a down jacket, a warm hat and gloves alongside your everyday clothes, plus sunglasses, sunscreen, a refillable bottle and a power bank. See our full Ladakh packing list.

Extending your trip

If you can add two more days, see our Leh itinerary for 7 days, which covers both Nubra and Pangong.

Final thoughts

A good 5-day Leh trip is not about seeing everything, and you will almost certainly leave wanting to come back for Nubra, Turtuk or the remote lakes of the south-east. Rest first, explore gently, and give your one big excursion the time it deserves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Five days is enough for Leh, nearby monasteries and one major excursion such as Pangong or Nubra, with proper rest. To see both Nubra and Pangong comfortably, plan for at least seven days.

It is possible on paper, but it leaves little time to acclimatise and means long, tiring drives. We recommend choosing one for a five-day trip.

Yes, with care. The first two days are deliberately light. Watch children and older travellers for signs of altitude sickness and be ready to skip the Pangong night if anyone is unwell.
