A complete Srinagar to Leh road guide: the route via Sonamarg, Zojila, Drass, Kargil, Mulbekh and Lamayuru, what to see, a 2- or 3-day itinerary, budget options, adventures and package choices.
The road from Srinagar to Leh is one of the most varied drives in the Himalaya. In two or three days you go from the meadows of Kashmir over Zojila into the high desert of Ladakh, passing war memorials, rock-cut Buddhas, ancient monasteries and the Moonland. This Srinagar to Leh road guide covers the route, what to see, a complete itinerary and practical tips.
Why take the Srinagar–Leh route?
- Gradual altitude gain: easier on your body than flying straight to Leh.
- Cultural variety: Kashmiri, Balti, Shia and Buddhist communities along the way.
- History: Kargil War Memorial, ancient monasteries and rock carvings.
- Usually opens earlier in the season than the Manali road.

Srinagar Leh sightseeing: stop by stop
Sonamarg
A meadow town in the Sind valley, ringed by pine forests and glaciers. A good place for breakfast or a short walk before Zojila.
If you stay a night in Sonamarg, use the extra time for a gentle walk in the meadows or a pony ride towards the Thajiwas glacier area. It is a pleasant contrast to the arid landscapes that follow, and a good way to start adjusting to altitude.
Zojila
The pass between Kashmir and Ladakh. Narrow, often unsealed and busy with trucks. Expect delays. See our high mountain passes guide.
Drass and the Kargil War Memorial
Drass is the first major settlement after Zojila, and the Kargil War Memorial is just outside the town. See our Lamayuru to Kargil road guide.
Kargil
Ladakh's second town, at the confluence of the Suru and Drass rivers. The usual overnight stop.

Mulbekh
Home to an ancient rock-cut Maitreya Buddha beside the road and monasteries on the ridge above.

Namika La and Fotu La
Two passes between Mulbekh and Lamayuru, with Fotu La the highest point on the highway.
Lamayuru
An ancient monastery above the eroded Moonland landscape. A good overnight stop on a three-day trip.
Alchi and Likir
Short detours from the highway to two of Ladakh's most interesting monasteries. See our monasteries guide.
Magnetic Hill, Sangam and Hall of Fame
The last stops before Leh. See our Leh sightseeing guide.

Where to stay along the way
| Stop | Why stay here | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Sonamarg | Break the climb before Zojila; meadows and glacier walks | Hotels and guesthouses; busy in summer |
| Drass | Close to the memorial; quieter than Kargil | Limited, simple options |
| Kargil | The natural halfway point | The widest choice on the route |
| Lamayuru | Moonland at sunset and sunrise | Simple guesthouses |
| Alchi | Village atmosphere and ancient temples | Guesthouses among apricot orchards |
How the landscape and culture change
Part of the fascination of this road is how quickly everything changes. Around Srinagar and Sonamarg the valleys are green, with pine forests, meadows and Kashmiri villages. Over Zojila, the trees disappear and the mountains turn bare and rocky. Drass and Kargil are largely Muslim towns, with mosques and imambaras, while beyond Mulbekh the first Buddhist chortens and monasteries appear. By the time you reach the Indus at Khalsi, you are firmly in Buddhist Ladakh, with whitewashed gompas on the hills and prayer flags on every pass.
Bus, shared taxi or private vehicle?
| Bus | Shared taxi | Private vehicle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lowest | Moderate | Highest, but split by group size |
| Stops | Fixed, few photo stops | Limited | Wherever you like |
| Overnight | Usually Kargil | Usually Kargil, sometimes straight through | Your choice |
| Best for | Budget travellers with time | Solo travellers and pairs | Families, groups, photographers |
Whatever you choose, avoid doing the whole journey in one long push. Breaking it at Kargil is better for both safety and acclimatisation.
Day 1 in detail: Srinagar to Kargil
Leave Srinagar early and follow the Sind river upstream through Kangan and Gund to Sonamarg. After a breakfast stop, the road climbs to Baltal and begins the ascent of Zojila. Traffic can be slow here, with trucks queuing on narrow bends; patience is essential. Once over the pass, the scenery changes abruptly: green slopes give way to bare, brown mountains. Continue past Minamarg to Drass, stop at the Kargil War Memorial, and follow the Drass river down to Kargil for the night.
Day 2 in detail: Kargil to Leh
From Kargil, the road heads east into the Wakha valley to Mulbekh and its rock-cut Maitreya. Climb over Namika La, pass Kharbu, and continue to Fotu La, the highest point of the journey. The descent brings Lamayuru and the Moonland into view. Follow the road down to the Indus at Khalsi, then along the river past Nurla and Saspol – with a short detour to Alchi if time allows – and on to Nimmu, the Sangam viewpoint, Magnetic Hill and finally Leh.
Srinagar Leh budget trip tips
- Buses and shared taxis: economical in season.
- Guesthouses in Kargil: more affordable than hotels.
- Eat local: Kashmiri and Ladakhi food is filling and inexpensive.
- Share vehicles: join other travellers to split the cost of a taxi.
See our Ladakh budget trip guide for more.
Srinagar Leh sightseeing with children or older travellers
The Srinagar route is often the more comfortable choice for families and older travellers, because towns with hotels and medical facilities are spaced along the way and the altitude rises more gradually. Keep driving days manageable: three days instead of two is kinder on everyone. Plan toilet and snack stops in Sonamarg, Drass, Kargil and Lamayuru, carry warm layers for Zojila and Fotu La, and avoid long walks at the passes. The Kargil War Memorial and the Mulbekh Buddha are usually of interest to all ages.
Srinagar Leh adventure options
- Riding the route: a classic motorcycle journey. See the Srinagar to Leh bike trip guide.
- Treks near Sonamarg: short walks and longer treks in the area.
- Rafting: on the Indus and Zanskar near Leh in season.
Food along the highway
Food changes with the landscape. In Srinagar and Sonamarg, look for Kashmiri dishes such as rajma-rice, kahwa (spiced green tea) and, for non-vegetarians, rogan josh. Roadside dhabas around Zojila and Drass serve simple dal, rice, rotis, Maggi noodles and tea – welcome after the pass. Kargil has restaurants serving Kashmiri, Ladakhi and North Indian food, and local bakeries sell fresh bread in the mornings. Beyond Lamayuru, Ladakhi dishes such as thukpa and momos become more common. Carry snacks and water anyway, as dhaba hours are not guaranteed.
Travelling in reverse: Leh to Srinagar
Many travellers leave Ladakh by this road, sometimes after arriving via Manali. Heading west, you are already acclimatised, so the main challenges are the long distances and Zojila traffic. A typical plan is Leh to Kargil on day one (with stops at Alchi, Lamayuru and Mulbekh), and Kargil to Srinagar on day two, crossing Zojila in the morning. Check the westbound timing at Zojila before setting off.
Who this route suits
- First-time visitors who want to acclimatise gradually.
- Families who prefer towns with facilities along the way.
- History and culture enthusiasts interested in Kashmir, Kargil and Buddhist Ladakh.
- Riders looking for a gentler introduction to Himalayan roads.
Acclimatisation on the Srinagar route
Although this route climbs more gradually than the Manali road, you still arrive in Leh at around 3,500 m. Take the first day in Leh easy, even if you feel fine after the drive, and avoid going straight on to Khardung La or Pangong. A night at Kargil and another at Lamayuru or Alchi give your body more time to adjust. See our altitude and acclimatisation guide.
Practical tips
- Road status: check Zojila status before leaving Srinagar.
- Start early: Zojila traffic builds up during the day.
- Fuel and cash: available in Srinagar, Kargil and Leh; limited elsewhere.
- Mobile networks: some prepaid connections from outside the region may not work.
- Security: follow official advisories and checkpoint instructions.
What to pack for the drive
The route passes through very different climates in a short time. Keep a warm jacket, hat and gloves handy for Zojila and Fotu La, a rain jacket for the Kashmir side, and sunglasses and sunscreen for the bright Ladakh sun. Carry water, snacks, motion-sickness remedies if needed, printed documents and enough cash for tolls, food and fuel. Our Ladakh packing list covers the rest.

A Srinagar Leh package or Srinagar Kargil Leh tour saves you arranging vehicles and hotels. Tripsdoc's Srinagar Leh Manali Package and Manali Leh Srinagar Package pages show their current routes and inclusions. At least two days, with an overnight in Kargil. Three days, with an extra night at Lamayuru or Alchi, is more relaxed and better for acclimatisation.
Generally yes. It gains altitude more gradually and has a lower overnight stop at Kargil, which many travellers find easier.
